"Nin-nin!"

— Nonoka's catchphrase

Nonoka is an Ukami Clan shinobi and loyal retainer to Sakuya, Amatsu's priestess who is also the fire witch.

Appearance[]

Nonoka's defining feature is the cardboard box she constantly wears on her head. It is depicted as beat-up, with signs of shoddy repair. It is inferred through dialogue and Alto's room that the box she wears is frequently replaced. Curiously, the box is able to convey a limited range of emotion through its two semi-circular cut eye holes, typically Nonoka's frequent reactions of being flustered and surprised.

Nonoka also possesses a buxom figure, which is often the subject of comedy relief and contempt, the latter of which mainly by Sakuya. Her shinobi outfit which consists of a fishnet body stocking and a red string bikini underneath also does no favors in garnering the gaze of those around her, particularly Alto.

Personality[]

"A shinobi responsible for protecting Lady Sakuya and has sworn loyalty to her.

Nonoka has a kind and gentle personality, but can be extremely clumsy. Because of her shyness to others, she hides her face by wearing a cardboard box over her head.

Her hobbies are protecting—and being teased by—Sakuya."

— Nonoka's profile on the official Stella Glow website[1]

Nonoka is a kind and gentle person yet very clumsy as well. However she is very shy to the point it affects her performance as a shinobi, almost getting her kicked out of her own clan. However after meeting Sakuya who gave her the cardboard box to hide her face, Nonoka was able to perform her shinobi duties at her absolute best. She also holds a strong loyalty to Sakuya that she will follow and protect her no matter what. Nonoka also demonstrates signs of masochism, especially when putting up with Sakuya's harsh treatment and with the dubious nature of her shinobi "training" (i.e. one training session involves melting candle wax onto her body).

She will only take off her cardboard box under two circumstances: She feels the person or people she's with are important and is comfortable around them (As shown around Alto when you max Affinity with her). Or she is taking a shower or bath as shown during The 9th regiment's trip to Hanare-Yu Kachoan. Other then these two situations, she will be too shy or timid to even reveal a peak of her face. However even with her shyness, Nonoka has shown she has a strong sense of duty and determination especially towards Sakuya. When Sakuya was in danger of being executed by Dorothy, Nonoka didn't hesistate for a second to rush to save her. And when Dorothy was about to kill Sakuya, Nonoka jumped in at the last second and took a hit for Sakuya.

Outside of battle, Nonoka is shown to be a very clumsy person making mistakes every now and then in either a comical fashion or even cute. However these are unintentional mistakes she makes and being very blissful of how others react to certain features like how thin layered her clothing is. However once brought up, she becomes flustered.

History[]

Prior to Main Events[]

Youngsakunono

"Just wear this, you big-boobed turtle."

Prior to becoming Sakuya's retainer, as a child, Nonoka was a shinobi trainee in the Ukami clan. Despite her proficiency when training alone, the shinobi-in-training would fumble when in the presence of others. Because of her severe stage fright, Nonoka faced the prospect of banishment should she fail her shinobi examination.

On the day of her exam, Nonoka wept in seclusion and was met by Sakuya, who had come to inspect the village as part of her priestess duties. Sakuya would place a cardboard box on Nonoka's head and suggest she wear it during her exam. To her onlookers' surprise, Nonoka would pass and was allowed to stay in the Ukami village. Indebted to Sakuya, Nonoka would come to serve her as a full-fledged shinobi.

Chapter 3 - The Festival of Fire[]

Chapter 8 - Let the Anthem Ring[]

As preparations begin for the Anthem, the Harbingers launch one last ditch assault in order to halt the proceedings. Nonoka accompanies Archibald, Rusty, Ewan, and Keith to defend against the attack at the castle outskirts. Despite their success in defeating the remaining Harbinger forces, Hilda manages to surround the group with crystals in order to evade them and infiltrate the Anthem Hall.

Chapter 9 - The End of the World[]

When the 9th Regiment visit Veronica and learn of the Eclipse and Mother Qualia's curse over humanity, the regiment disbands over conflicts of interest concerning their course of action. When Rusty rallies those who wished to continue fighting, only Sakuya volunteers with Nonoka following suit.

Slaying Angels in the surrounding forests, Nonoka is the first to express her concerns over the trio's aimless efforts. Dante, having returned from his own Angel extermination, approaches the trio and informs them of Alto's lone defense of a besieged Lambert.

Nonoka reunites with Alto and the rallied 9th Regiment, fighting the Angels with renewed conviction. With the combined efforts of the reunited regiment and Harbingers, the invading Angels are driven out of the Lambert. After the battle's end, Nonoka is ordered by Sakuya to perform a quick damage assessment of the capital.

Nonoka's Ending[]

Nonokaend

"Nin-nin-niiiin!"

One month after the events of the Eclipse, life in Regnant has returned to normal. Alto and Nonoka are in Amatsu preparing pickled vegetables for Sakuya, where the former is taught the secret Ukami clan techniques in preparing the dish. When Alto questions whether it is acceptable for him in having learned them, Nonoka hints at her deeper affections for him. Though Alto remains oblivious to her advances, the two share a special dinner.

Gameplay[]

Combat[]

"As Nonoka is a shinobi, she has a wide range of movement and can take turns quickly in battle. Furthermore, by using the skill Shinobi Slash, she will hide and no longer be targeted by enemies. Sneak behind the enemy, and dispatch them. Nonoka is perfect for the shinobi fighting style."

— Nonoka's unit introduction

Nonoka intro

With unparalleled Agility growths, Nonoka boasts the fastest turn speed of any party member at a similar level. She joins Rusty as a fellow dagger wielder and highly mobile front line assassin. While she shares a base Leg Speed (tile movement) of 6 with the latter, she is also classified as a Water unit like Lisette, which allows her to traverse liquid surfaces unimpeded. Nonoka's physical offense and defenses are just shy of Rusty's, however, though she more than makes up for her comparative shortcomings with her proficiency in afflicting enemies with debilitating Status Changes.

Thanks to her Affinity-unlocked Abilities Status Ailment+ and Control Condition, Nonoka is granted near-guaranteed Orb ailment activation rates. Slotting her weapon with Orbs such as Sleep and Paralysis allows Nonoka's normal attacks and counterattacks to cripple most enemies that try to attack her. Outside of inflicting Status Changes with her normal attacks, Nonoka possesses a powerful array of single-target Skills. Shinobi Slash puts Nonoka into her unique Stealth status, making it so she cannot be directly targeted by enemies. While hidden, Nonoka can strike from the shadows with a Killing Strike, which has a chance to instantly dispatch its target. To complement her Affinity-unlocked Abilities, Nonoka is also able to inflict status ailments such as Paralysis, Sleep, Poison, Burn, and Negate Move through her Skills Beesting, Mind Devour, Know Thy Mistake, Fire Art, and Nonoka Special respectively.

However, as a result of her status-inflicting prowess with Orbs, Nonoka can find herself pigeon-holed into using her basic attacks over her Skills, which do not inflict Orb ailments. Nonoka also falls off to an extent in the latter stages of the game, with more regular enemies becoming immune to disabling status ailments.

Nonoka's bulk, while far from the worst, is still a factor to take into consideration when throwing the shinobi into the front line. With above average evasion thanks to her high Agility and passive Ability Parry, Nonoka can avoid damage completely with a bit of luck, though overextending can find her in unfavorable situations should she be overwhelmed.
